Discover CIRAUQUI, Camino de Santiago. Some history
Middleaged town of narrow streets and great, old houses with hundreds of years old family shields, Cirauqui has a long tradition of pilgrim hospitality. Its origin is linked with the romanization period and the Camino de Santiago; it is known that the town was donated to the Montastery of San Millan de la Cogolla in 1045. Modern Cirauqui has a population of 500 and has all the necessary services, along with a very interesting heritage, culture and enology.
Albergue Cirauqui Casa Maralotx is situated right across the square from one of the town’s two main monuments, the Fortress Church of San Román, dated around 1200 and with an altarpiece from the XVIIIth century that turns this church into the only one that could be given the title of «feminist» (come see us and we shall tell you why). It stands along with the church of Santiago in Puente la Reina and the church of San Pedro in Estella, as the only one with a multi-lobed arch in its doorway. Finally, another thing makes this church especial: there is a figure of a mermaid somewhere in its doorway (if you can’t find it, again, come to see us and we’ll show it to you).
